Once a year, billions will tune into their TVs or live streaming to hear what he has to say. At the annual WWDC, Steve Job’s words are nearly sacred.
This year, everyone’s talking about what’s new about the iOS5. Here’s what to expect from the operating system, due to be released this coming Fall.
1. iCloud

With iCloud, you no longer need a computer to set up and activate an iOS device. All your data can now be stored on a cloud. You can retrieve and back-up data wirelessly without needing to tether it to a computer.
Just like magic.
2. Notifications Center

How irritating is it to go to each app and check your notifications individually? In the upcoming iOS5, this will all be in one place. Probably inspired by the Facebook notification system, the feed can be accessed by swiping the top of the screen. It can also be customized to display only selected notifications from certain apps.
3. iMessage

The one thing that the Blackberry has used to retort the iPhone is BBM. Well, not anymore. iMessage allows you to send an unlimited number of instant messages to other iPhone users. Other features include photo, video, location and contact sharing.
While iMessage is expected to give other group messaging apps a run for their money, this is still to be seen. Third-party instant messaging apps, like WhatsApp, allow communication across multiple operating systems.
It all comes down to how iMessage will value-add to iPhone users compared to these other third-party apps.
4. Newsstand

This is basically a folder that holds you magazine and newspaper app subscriptions. Sort of like a beefed up iBooks.
All purchases go directly to the folder and displayed on a virtual newsstand. Updates to subscriptions delivered as soon as available to one quick and convenient location.
5. Reminders

We all need a to-do list. Hail reminders, the iOS5’s hi-tech way of keeping your life organized.
One nifty trick is that you can choose to make items location based. For example, when you are at the grocery store, your iPhone will remind you to pick up milk.
6. Camera and photos

It’s quite amazing that a simple software update can make your existing camera better.
With the iOS5, you can now open the Camera app directly from the lock screen – all the better to capture those opportune moments. On top of that, the update integrates more features of a regular digital camera, like grid lines, single-tap focus and exposure locks. The volute up button will also now work as a shutter button.
While all these features are by no means revolutionary, it is nice to have them all conveniently located in one device.
